British No 3 James Ward will play in the first round of the
Claro Open after coming through the qualifying draw in
Bogota.
Ward went to three sets against Marcelo Arevalo from El
Salvador in the final round but eventually came through to take
a 3-6 6-4 6-2 victory.
Arevalo, ranked 473rd in the world, won 93 per cent of his first-
serve points in the opening set as he put the pressure on his
opponent.
But Ward improved after dropping the first set and eventually
did enough to progress to the main draw, where he will play
Australia’s Matthew Ebden.
Three matches in the tournament proper were completed on
Monday, the most notable of which was Bernard Tomic’s 6-3
6-3 win over Farrukh Dustov.
